How the random words test works
You see a stream of the 200 most common English words. Type each word and press Space to move on. Letters turn dark when correct and red when wrong, and you cannot go back to an earlier word, so focus on getting each word right the first time. When time ends you get net WPM, accuracy and the same word-by-word report as our other tests.
Why common words?
About 200 words make up roughly half of all written English. Typing them without thinking is the base of a high speed. Because there is no punctuation or capitalisation here, your score shows raw finger speed. It will usually be 10 to 20% higher than your score on an exam passage.
Random words vs exam passages
Use this test for speed training and warm-ups. For exams, switch to the 10-minute passage test or an exam simulation, because exams include punctuation, capitals and long sentences.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Monkeytype?
No. Monkeytype is a separate website. This is our own random-words test in a similar minimal style, built into EnglishTyping.in with Indian exam tools alongside.
Why is my speed higher here than in the passage test?
Common words with no punctuation or capitals are easier to type. Exam passages are harder, so expect a lower but more realistic number there.
Can I correct a word after pressing space?
No. Like most minimal typing tests, a word is final once you press space. Backspace works inside the current word.
